Common People was founded at a corner table in the Bricklayer's Arms, Putney, in June 2010 by a group of activists who have worked together over the past ten years on a wide range of campaigns, blogs and elections.
We are constituted as a voluntary, non-profit group, with the aim of strengthening and promoting progressive politics in the UK.
In order to further this aim, we will seek to:
- Influence the outcome of elections.
- Influence the internal dynamics and elections of UK political parties where appropriate.
- Campaign for specific causes and policies.
Membership of Common People is open to anyone without regard to disability, political or religious affiliation, race, sex or sexual orientation who is interested in helping Common People to achieve its aims.
Joining our email list is all that's needed to be a member of Common People and to hear from us regularly on how you can take part in, and influence, our campaigns. In addition, there will always be lots of ways to take part in each individual campaign without joining the email list.
Voting membership comes with an invite to our Annual General Meeting - to scrutinise the board's decisions and work, and to help vote on management issues, fundraising, spending and new initiatives - and is available to any member willing to donate an amount to the campaign via recurring PayPal or Direct Debit agreement.
We have a diverse Advisory Council, consisting of people from a wide range of parties and campaigning organisations, and a board of eight people to run things day to day.
Variously, the board are members of the Green Party, the Labour Party and no party, but we all support the same principles of equality, rights, environmental protection and sustainability, and citizens working together to support each other and solve problems.
There is currently space for one more board member, and no limit to the number of people who can be involved in helping devise and run campaigns through the Advisory Council.
If you are interested in getting involved more in the organisation of Common People, email us today and we'll have a chat: firstname.lastname@example.org
We are a non-profit organisation and rely on small, individual donations to fund everything we do. If you want to help us out, you can donate via PayPal below (you can also set up a recurring donation this way if you want to become a voting member. Ways to donate via Direct Debit functions will be on the way soon).
